Academic wins int’l medal for quake studies

The head of the Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute has become the first Turkish professor to win the Bruce Bolt Medal, one of the most respected awards in earthquake engineering.

Professor Mustafa Erdik was granted the 2013 award because of his work in earthquake studies, a statement made by Boğaziçi University said.

The Bruce Bolt Medal is awarded jointly by the Consortium of Organizations for Strong-Motion Observation Systems (COSMOS), Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) and Seismological Society of America (SSA) to recognize individuals worldwide whose accomplishments involve the promotion and use of strong-motion earthquake data.

Erdik has worked as the head of the Department of Earthquake Engineering at Boğaziçi University since 1987, and he has been the head of the Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute since 2010. He has received many awards including the U.N. Prevention of Disaster Awards.
