Three groups of refugees, including children, embarked on the dangerous cruise early June 4 from the southwestern Turkish resort of Bodrum to the Greek island of Kos, which is only 13 miles away.

Turkish gendarmerie forces, who were patrolling the area, spotted 60 refugees at 04.00 a.m. as they were departing the coast in the Aspat area of Bodrum with a 8-meter dinghy.

Despite life-threatening conditions on the sea, refugees on the dinghy resisted the gendarmerie, who tried to take them back to the Turkish coast to detain them.

Some refugees from one boat fell into the sea were saved, and in the end all 60 refugees on the boat were brought back to the Turkish coast and there detained by police.

Refugees in two other boats, however, managed to dodge the Turkish coast guard, though some of them also fell into the sea.

Meanwhile, another refugee group of 30 refugees left Turkey from the nearby Fener (Lantern) Cape at around 04.30 a.m., traveling in an 8-meter dinghy. The engine of the dinghy stopped working off the Turkish coast and two people from the dinghy jumped into the sea.

Soon, the group fixed the problem and brought the two refugees back into the boat. The Turkish coast guard warned the group to return to the coast but it could not catch the speeding dinghy, which reached the coast of Kos soon afterward.

A third group of refugees left the Bitez area of Bodrum at 05.00 a.m. in similar conditions. Their dinghy stopped working after reaching Greek waters, and the Greek coast guard suıbsequently detained all refugees on board and took them to Kos
