500 commuters block road in Istanbul due to lack of public bus

ISTANBUL - Doğan News Agency
Around 500 people blocked a road for three hours in Istanbul’s Altunizade district yesterday after becoming angered when the public bus they had been waiting for did not arrive after an extended period of time.

Traffic was halted for three hours due to the protest, as quarrels erupted between passengers who were waiting and drivers who were stuck on the road.

The passengers, who were trying to catch a public bus that services the route between Üsküdar and Sultanbeyli neighborhoods, said that the buses that did pass by were constantly full.

A woman who participated in the protest criticized the authorities for providing insufficient public transportation despite the area’s rapid expansion and surrounding residential growth.
