Flamingos change migratory route due to drought
Flamingos change migratory route due to drought
Flamingos, who usually nest at the reeds in eastern Van province's Erciş district, started to stay at the open areas of Lake Van, located some 3 kilometers from their previous destination, after water levels decreased due to drought. (DHA Photo)
As a significant destination for migratory birds, the Lake Van basin is hosting thousands of flamingos this year as usual.
The reeds of Çelebibağ, Gölağzı and Kasımbağı neighborhoods are significant locations where these birds migrate to during the summer season.
However, this year the flamingos, which nested at the reeds in Gölağzı, started to fly to the open areas of Lake Van, after the lake receded due to drought.
Cracks have formed due to drought in the coastal areas where the lake's recession can be observed.
