Young Turk student gets Boeing Award

Istanbul Technical University researcher Güliz Tokadlı was presented her award by Bernard J. Dunn, Boeing Turkey president, at a ceremony.

Istanbul Technical University researcher Güliz Tokadlı received the 2013 Boeing Engineering Student of the Year Award in the undergraduate category from Boeing and Flightglobal during a ceremony held July 9 in Istanbul.

This recognition celebrates her extensive study and considerable work in the development of a conceptual functional flight display (FFD) intended for the next generation of flight deck displays. The FFD is a primary flight instrument displaying an optimal flight path as a tunnel of boxes in the sky. This recommended flight path is derived from the integration of weather, terrain, obstacles and airborne collision avoidance information. Tokadlı’s graduation project, “Human Factors and Human-Machine Interface Design in New Generation Cockpits,” includes recommendations for further research to resolve the human-factor issues associated with adding synthetic vision to the FFD.

Tokadli received her Bachelor’s of Science in astronautics engineering in June 2013 and has been an active participant over the course of her undergraduate education in two Unmanned Aerial Vehicle design-build-fly teams, a space-type system launch and a novel mission concept for a nano-satellite. In the latter project she was fully responsible for the command and data-handling subsystem design.

“This is noteworthy work, and she symbolizes the kind of future engineering professionals who will truly make a difference in the field and will help improve the lives of people worldwide,” said Bernard J. Dunn, Boeing Turkey president.
