Writers meet at the British Council

ISTANBUL
Writers meet at the British Council The British Council will organize a meeting of celebrated writers from the United Kingdom and Turkey with their readers.

The first of these meetings will bring together Hanif Kureishi, the screenwriter of the movie “My Beautiful Laundrette,” which was nominated for an Oscar award, and Murathan Mungan, another venerated writer, at the Pera Museum on Feb. 18.

The meetings, during which writers will share their experiences with literature fans, will reveal the richness of the two countries’ literatures.

With his many novels and screenplays, Kureishi, a British writer of Pakistani descent, is one of the leading writers in the United Kingdom.

Mungan is a poet, writer and screenwriter whose works have been translated into 12 languages up to date, including Persian and Norwegian.

The program will continue until March 3 in Istanbul, İzmir and Ankara with meetings featuring Paul McVeigh, Sema Kaygusuz, Ned Beauman and Hakan Günday. Moderators will be Elif Bereketli, Esen Kara and Fatma Cihan Akkartal.

During these exciting meetings, writers will read sections from their own books and talk on a wide range of subjects varying from the dark side of metropolitan life to alienation.

The program will also support the establishment of literary partnerships between the two countries. In addition to the Pera Museum in Istanbul, the meetings will be held at Yaşar University in İzmir and the Contemporary Arts Center in Ankara.

All the talks will also be translated for audiences with hearing disabilities.
