One worker was killed and 15 were injured due to an explosion at a factory in the Marmara province of Kocaeli on Jan. 13, Doğan News Agency has reported. 

The explosion occurred in a steel pit at a rolling plant in an industrial site in the province’s Dilovası district at 11:00 a.m. Witnesses said the explosion occurred while the pit was under reparation.

The injured workers were taken to the hospital, while a number of ambulances and firefighters were dispatched to the area.

Meanwhile, a worker identified as 34-year-old Ali Koca was killed after being crushed under steel pieces.

There were no immediate reports regarding the cause of the explosion. 

Gebze District Governor Mehmet Arslan said an investigation would be launched to determine whether there was any negligence involved in the blast.

“One worker was killed and 15 others were wounded due to the explosion. The wounded workers are not at risk of death. An investigation into the incident is being conducted by officials inside the plant. I met with the owners and officials of the plant. An investigation will be launched to determine if there was any negligence involved in the blast,” Arslan added.
