A worker died at the construction site of a new Istanbul metro line on May 22, just one day after its groundbreaking ceremony with the participation of Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Kadir Topbaş.

Adil Kolukısaoğlu, 32, died at the construction of the Mecidiyeköy stop of the metro line that aims to connect Istanbul’s central exchange hub to the seaside neighborhood of Kabataş.

The groundbreaking ceremony of the metro line had been held on May 21, only one day before the accident.

Kolukısaoğlu, who was married with one child, was allegedly sitting to the side of a heavy construction machine near the Mecidiyeköy stop area when he lost his balance and fell to the ground. The machine operator did not realize Kolukısaoğlu had fallen and drove over him, causing his death.

Kolukısaoğlu’s co-workers pulled his body from underneath the machine, called an ambulance and informed the police about the incident, for which an investigation has been launched.
