A woman in Istanbul has been detained for attempting to undergo an abortion in the fifth month of her pregnancy, daily Habertürk has reported.

Police forces acted on information regarding an illegal abortion at a doctor's office in Eyüp, and detained the pregnant woman before the abortion could take place.

The woman confessed to planning to abort the baby, and she was released following the required legal procedures.

The doctor, who had been on trial before for causing the death of a baby during a previous illegal abortion, denied all accusations.

The pending new abortion regulation draft requires women who attempt to undergo abortions after the legal 10 week limitation to be sentened to three years. Those conducting abortions outside permitted offices also face two to four years in prison.
