Ankara won’t allow South Cyprus to breach Turkey’s continental shelf for exploration of oil and gas in the Eastern Mediterranean, said Deputy Foreign Minister Naci Koru during a Twitter interview with the International Relations Council of Turkey (UIK) on Feb. 22. “Our country and Northern Cyprus have objected to exploration activities [conducted] by South Cyprus. The unilateral stand of South Cyprus means the extortion of Turkish Cypriots’ rights,” he said, noting that Turkey had previously stated that international firms who cooperate with the Greek Cypriot government won’t be allowed to join new projects in Turkey.

By conducting the interview using the social media website Twitter, the UIK also gave Koru the occasion to comment on several aspects of the Turkish Foreign Ministry’s global policies.

Koru argued that the seat Turkey held at the UN Security Council from 2009 to 2011 enlarged the horizon of Turkish diplomacy. “Our membership at the UN Security Council has brought our connections through the world further and strengthened our ‘global playmaker’ status,” he said.

Koru also emphasized that the “zero problems with neighbors” policy put forward by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has contributed to the advancement of political dialogue as well as economical and cultural ties with neighbors, stressing that visas have been lifted in many countries as part as this policy. “This policy is based on the fact that [we should] focus not on our differences but on areas of cooperation [with neighboring countries],” he said.

I was wondering if Mr Davodoglu has realized that his empty threats have been sounded as a broken record over the years and now he has found an other person to continue his legacy so he does not look like a joker to the world anymore ! If that is the case I'll give him credit. I would also suggest that Mr Bagis does the same thing so Turkey has a chance to join the EU.

Hahahahaha DutchTurk, I agree with you. Well said. You just can't allow your neighbours to bully you or hold you hostage even when they are as tiny as southern Cyprus. Sometimes, the lion needs to roar back at the little jackals :)

As stated recently in an analogous thread, it is perfectly reasonable for Turkey to take all such necessary measures to exercise her rights over resources under the Turkish shelf and given that the nearest point of Cyprus is just 42 miles from the mainland it has to be more than likely that gas deposits do lie thereunder.

The so-called "zero problem policy" is a huge joke. Name one country in the "neighborhood" apart from Azerbaijan that Turkey gets along with... Erdogan may have achieved a lot in the field of economy but very few in Turkey's relationship with its neighboring states. And the more Turkey advances with its economy the more arrogant (sometimes even hostile) it's becoming. The comment made by DutchTurk about "Turkish Armed Forces Correcting Policy" of your gov't notion of "dealing with problems".

Hit the nail on the head Dutch Turk. There truly is no point when it comes to explaining things to snarling Euro Trash! With them Turkey's damned if it does and damned if it doesn't! As far as I'm aware most of Turkeys neighbours have a "it's my way or the highway" policy towards Turkey dating back decades.

just yesterday, greece had gone to the un about turkey violating its continental shelf for oil drilling. and what was turkey's reply? continental shelves are too murky to understand and all the hard line talk backers whole heartedly agreed. i thought it would take at least 6 months for the turkish government to use the same argument about someone else...ha

If they think that they can declare a territorial claim two kilometres from the coast line like what happened after the First World War that was enforced by imperialist powers onto Turks they live in a dream world or should start swimming lessons.

International community is terrified. Everybody hopes that the Turkish continental shelf will stop somewhere near Canada.

Bully tactics are not a criterion for EU membership my dear Turkey, we are not living in the middle ages!
