MEHMET ALİ BİRAND > We will also be in trouble when Israel strikes Iran

We are busy with our own issues. Thus, we cannot observe in the real sense what is going on around us. I have come to New York for a few days and my first job was to get a feel of the pulse of the United Nations. For this reason, instead of gossiping in domestic politics, I want to share a terrifying piece of news with you.

The development that bothers Washington the most is that Israel is preparing to bomb Iran’s nuclear center in the coming months. The Obama administration is extremely tense about the probability of experiencing such a development before the presidential elections in November.

A White House official said a countdown has begun, explaining, “We know that Israel will not allow Iran to possess nuclear weapons. It is extremely difficult to stop them.” The same source also said, “Iran is roofing its nuclear production unit and strengthening it against bombing. Israel believes this construction will be completed by the New Year and after this, an armed intervention would be impossible. Because of this, they are preparing.”

The same source who pointed out that there was a very wrong perception that Israel would never stop following Washington’s advice, said the Netanyahu government did not trust Obama and thus there were concerns that there were plans to strike before the election: “In the case that they strike before elections, they calculate that Obama will not be able to move. If Obama is elected after the elections, they state that it would be more difficult for them.

At this stage, nobody knows when and how Israel will strike. Even though concerns are increasing, nobody can make Israel listen to advice.

It is good to be prepared.

Turkey and the region will be affected extensively
- Israel’s bombing of Iran’s nuclear center will bring developments whose consequences are not easy to calculate in the region. In such a probability, Iran will certainly reciprocate and Israel will be under a missile shower.

- It will be Washington who will first rush to help Israel.

- In this case, the supporters and opponents of the United States will be forced to pick their sides and take a stance accordingly.

- Turkey will not be able to stay entirely neutral in such a clash. However, it will be in a full-scale dilemma on which side to hold. Will it just criticize Israel with harsh statements? In case the United States succeeds activating the UN Security Council to impose sanctions against Iran, then what stance will it take?

Whatever step Israel will take will, most probably, connect the triangle of Iran, Iraq and Syria more to each other. They will absolutely have Russia’s and China’s support behind them.

Imagine Turkey’s situation. It is very difficult to act hesitantly in this case. Midway diplomacy is almost impossible.

For example, will it turn its back to Washington and support the Iran-Syria-Iraq triangle? Or will it move in just the opposite direction with the United States and Israel?

It is out of the question to get anywhere with the Iran-Iraq-Syria triangle. To walk with the Washington-Tel Aviv duo will be contradicting policies conducted up to this day, thus meaning the popularity of Ak party to fall in many Arab country streets.

The side effects of such confusion will be the eruption of a Palestine war, Egypt being pulled into the war and even Lebanon getting involved.

This is what is being feared. Including Turkey, the entire region may be smeared in blood.

AYAZID I am by no means a pacifist and if there was a single country in the Middle East that truly wanted democracy, I would be all for fighting to the death with those people. BUT no one wants us, so why are we suffereing, losing our people, to no good end? Bring everyone home and defend our country and let the rest of the World take care of itself for a change. There will always be people like BLUE and Schmuck that will never be happy with what ever we do.

WOODROW I didn't say "turn over" the bases, I said "LEVEL THEM LIKE THEY NEVER EXISTED" and then ....... BLUE No I have never heard Iran threaten Israel with attack, BUT see my earlier post. I heard the President of Iran speak at Columbia University and he said that Israel should be wiped from the face of the Earth! How is that different from threatening attack? Please advise.

Tara Mcglothin- Rebringing People Home, for my money we should cut the Bait and come home today tomorrow will be too late! All we do there now, is create new local profeteering Millioners. The insanity of creating a Democracy, where there is no infrastructure to support it, is smoking a wrong Pipe. Afghans on the street and villages prefer Sharia Law, for them that type of Justice is swift and final, no need for lawyers, jails! The regional 'Agas'shield them with their Protection & Influence!

@ mara, oh I see. You are a pacifist but USA shouldn't abandond their imperial policies for humanitarian reasons. You make it sound like if all your country´s political and military establishment cares about is the good of others. Sorry, but the world is no Star Wars.

@ US Observer, sorry for bursting your bubble but Iran hasn't proclaimed that it intents to attack Israel. Those dangerous Islamic nuts who are ruling there haven´t attacked any country during the last 30 years of their regime´s existence, unlike your country. And no, there is no proof whatsoever that Iran wants to obtain nuclear weapons or that Iran´s leaders are suicidal lunatics, ready to blow up their own country in a total war with Israel and USA.

mara, I agree with you 100%. Turn all our military bases over to the country they are on and bring all military back home. When military issues arise in other countries let them take care of it. DON'T look to the west for help. . . .we know how much you appreciate it bu burning our flag. murat, you are right, we (America) is the only country to drop the atom bomb. Do you know why it was dropped? Probably not. It was dropped on a country that declared war on the United States. If someone

@murat - OK fair enough, but different circumstances, different time, and different players on the table now. You input is irrelevant here and now and misleading in your account of Israel's war with neighbor countries. A bit biased account of you ask me.

@ Ayazid- Directed intent, even if vocalized is in fact a basis for reaction. All that aside, the proof you are looking for would only come from an act, thus using the weapon...which is convienent for you. Furthermore, you claim that using the weapon would be "suicide". I see Islamist killing themselves all the time in the name of their religion, how exactly does that argument support you? Finally @ Safiyah, interesting statement...I have plenty of evil from Muslims.

Some commenters think Iran would attack Israel for some reason. Iran has never threatened to attack Israel except if Israel first attacked Iran. Iran has not attacked anyone in 200 years. Israel has attacked all its Arab neighbor in the last 50 years. Israel is the problem in the ME, not Iran. Israel is threatening to attack Iran, not the opposite. Get a grip on reality, please.
