VIDEO: Group throws stones at police van in second day of clashes

The group of demonstrators eventually dispersed after police reinforcements arrived, deploying rounds of tear gas.

A group of demonstrators pelted a police van with stones, in the second consecutive day of clashes in Istanbul’s restive Okmeydanı neighborhood after officers shot and killed a mourner at a funeral.

Following the death of a second man wounded in May 22 clashes between police and a group of protesters, masked demonstrators first pelted an empty police van on May 23. Then, the same group started to throw stones at another police van full of officers.

The police officers in the van attempted to fire a tear gas canister, but the gas affected the officers inside. The van subsequently hit the sidewalk, with the officers struggling to escape the vehicle.

A number of demonstrators were forced to escape when one officer returned, threatening them with a firearm. The rest of the group was dispersed after police reinforcements arrived, again deploying rounds of tear gas.
