VIDEO: Divers discover four-meter large squid egg mass in southwestern Turkey

A team of divers in Turkey’s southwestern tourist spot of Fethiye discovered a four-meter wide gelatinous mass that could be the largest squid egg mass ever discovered, Deep Sea News reported.

Early on July 2015, a group of divers off the coast of Fethiye discovered and filmed a gelatinous mass which they were unable to identify. 

A scientist provided an answer to the mystery once the divers uploaded their video online. 

Dr. Mike Vecchione of the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, who specializes in biological oceanography, suggested the sphere could be the biggest squid egg mass ever discovered. 

Vecchione believes the mass could have been produced by a large red flying squid, the ommastrephes bartramii, which can grow up to one-and-a-half meters long. 

The only egg mass that could rival the one documented in Fethiye was found in the Gulf of California in 2008. The mass was described as being between three and four meters long and was believed to contain 600,000 to two million eggs.
