The United States and Israeli evaluation of Iran’s nuclear program are closer than ever following a secret U.S. intelligence report, Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak said on Aug. 9.

“It seems there really is a report by U.S. intelligence agencies. I don’t know if it’s by the National Intelligence Estimate or a different agency circulating between senior chambers,” he told public radio, asked about the report which ran by Israeli daily Haaretz.

“As far as we know, it brings the American assessment much much closer to ours,” Barak said. “I’d say that compared to previous American appraisals, it makes the Iranian issue a bit more urgent.”

US declines comment on Barak’s remark

However, the White House on Aug. 9 declined to respond to Barak’s comment. White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters on Air Force One that he would not comment on “intelligence matters or intelligence ... the president may or may not have received.” He said Obama remained committed to preventing Iran from getting a nuclear weapon.

Israel, the sole if undeclared nuclear power in the Middle East, says Iran’s nuclear program poses an existential threat to it, and has repeatedly refused to rule out military action to halt Tehran’s nuclear activity. A series of visits by high-ranking U.S. defense officials to Israel raised speculation that Washington was trying to dissuade Israel from a preemptive military attack.

@Pyotr Ivanovich - Those assertions are also problematic. What is "relative peace"? see for example the massacre of the safed jews in 1834 (admittedly not ottoman rule, but it was palestinian arabs who threw away the ottomans), as well other dates: 1517, 1660, 1838, 1929 - all before Israel became a state, most well before zionism. You seem to forget that zionism was a DIRECT reaction to such massacres of jews - mainly in eastern europe, but also in arab countries and the ottoman empire.

Cloud Chaser-re Mideast, it had relative peace, from Horizon to Harizon under Ottoman Empire from 1516-1918 and Ligue of Nations Mandate administered by British & French. Present day Palestinians fell disposessed and fight back.and the Arab Spring is a new Factor. As for Turkish_Israeli relations, let me tell you as an Non-Turk, If my Allie trained my enemies, as Mossad did in Northern Iraq, with a full knowledge of then PM Sharon, I too would not have Israel for an Allie.

@Ilker Avni -Your drummbeats of War are loud and Clear, no one can miss them, same as no one with experience of total War destruction, will escape nightmares that sendd shievers down ones spine. Pictures of terror stricken children, their mother trying to shield them with her frail body, are fresh in my memories, as if it was yesterday.Terror is universal and spares no Country. There must be a better way than have emotions overtake the Reason and creat another Chernobyl in Mideast!

If Iran developes the nuclear weapons it will be thanks to Obama,Iran is building up its missile systems to deliver nuclear missiles that can hit European targets as well as israel.they test they missiles every few weeks.Obama must give the goahead before they regret the worse, otherwise Iran could end up another North Korea, where they are untouchable because they have nuclear weapons.
