U.S. Consul-General to Istanbul Jennifer Davis visited on Jan. 6 the scene of a deadly terror attack at Istanbul’s Reina nightclub in which 39 people were killed and dozens were wounded.

Davis first stood for a minute of silence at the entrance to the nightclub in the Ortaköy neighborhood before laying flowers.

Security forces also took tight security measures during the consul-general’s visit, as traffic was closed in both directions.

At least one gunman opened fire on New Year’s revelers at the packed nightclub on the shores of Istanbul’s Bosporus early on Jan. 1, killing at least 39 people, including many foreigners, before fleeing the scene.

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has claimed responsibility for the attack.
