President Barack Obama and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke by telephone yesterday "to coordinate efforts to accelerate a political transition in Syria," the White House said.

This "would include the departure of (Syrian leader) Bashar al-Assad and be responsive to the legitimate demands of the Syrian people," the statement said.

Obama and Erdogan shared their concerns over the Syrian regime's crackdown on opposition "and the deteriorating humanitarian conditions throughout Syria as a result of the regime's atrocities." Both promised to coordinate efforts to help the growing numbers of Syrians displaced by the violence within Syria or forced to flee over the border to take refuse in Turkey or other nations in the region.

The statement said US and Turkish teams "would remain in close contact on ways that Turkey and the United States can work together to promote a democratic transition in Syria." Ankara has become a champion of the uprising against Assad's Syrian regime and has given refuge to large numbers of army defectors, who have formed the kernel of a rebel army, as well as tens of thousands of civilian refugees.

Some 44,000 Syrians fleeing unrest in their homeland have already flooded refugee camps in Turkey, and Obama paid tribute to Turkish generosity.

Meanwhile government forces strafed rebel-held districts in Aleppo with helicopter gunships on Monday and pounded them with shelling on the third day of a pitched battle for Syria's commercial capital.

The fighting has sent some 200,000 civilians fleeing the northern city, according to the UN, which warned of a looming humanitarian catastrophe, while France said it would call an urgent UN Security Council meeting on Syria.

TEKION I am not a "mister" and in America we are not so strung out about "insult and honor" Bush is in the same paper bag as Obama and they still can't find the exit. I am nothing more than a hard core American. We speak our minds without worry of being sued or arrested for our thoughts! BLUE Once again you are way off. Obama has never worked a day in his life, and wouldn't know a corporation if it hit him in the head. He is a Harvard educated idiot who learned leftist principles early

Let me remind you that Ottomans had ruled the Middle east for five hundred years in peace,Turkey seeks the same, peace with our neighbours but Not at any price.Turkey is bigger enough to take care of its own problems without American help. The main trouble is islamic countries who act out of they own interests useing American power against Islamic dictatorships. Its not the fault of America, the fault lies with Muslims.Iraq,Afganistan,Pakistan are at the mercy of home grown terroists.

Mara, please, there are no socialists in American politics. Obama, Bush and Romney are all corporatists that tout neo-liberalism as the only possible global politco-economic ideology. The main reason that Obamacare got passed was that it would benefit the HMOs, not the American people. The HMOs wrote the bill. As far as foreign policy is concerned, the US is hegemonic and imperialists and cares nothing about democracy, freedom or human rights. The US runs a global protection racket.

Mr mara mcglothin, I am assuming you are a mister. I tend not to get involved in US politics but to insult a president elected by the people by saying "he could not a find his way out of a paper bag without assistance" makes you sound like a hard core Republican. George W Bush could not complete a sentence without assistance, so what is your point? All leaders rely on their advisers for clarity and decision making process, I guess Obama is no different, at least he didn't rig the elections.

RIMON Obama is a socialist who could not find his way out of a paper bag without assistance. Do you really believe that the USA is the only country involved with others simply for their own interests? Is it wrong to be lookng out for yourself? And are we the only country selling arms, and uranium to others? I think not. The USA just serves as a convenient scapegoat for anyone who wants to sit back and criticize, but has no solutions of their own to offer. Peace prize is a joke!

@ Mara Sorry! It has got nothing to do with me feeling better or worse, it's just facts! Look at the US history, not only interfering into any possible conflict as a self-appointed "World-police", but selling lots and lots of weapons to any possible country and especially in the ME and Africa. If I think that Obama got (and accepted!) the Nobel Award for peace, without having even moved one finger, it makes me roaring of laughter. This was the moment my sympathies were finished.

Amazing hypocrisy, well, just propaganda. They know the FSA mercenaries they support are responsible for the vast majority of atrocities in Syria, and that the greater number of displaced Syrians are displaced within Syria. They willfully support and coordinate these attacks on the Syrian people from their HQ at Incirlik, which include defecting Syrian generals and GCC officials as well a NATO intelligence personnel. Eventually, they will need to use war planes and artillary themselves on Syria

GEOFF And you can be sure that the American people do NOT want any part of an armed conflict in Syria!!! These guys can talk all they want but they will not take any action to be sure. All talk! RIMON War mongerers? Really? USA always gets the blame no matter what. If it makes you feel better then I guess it is ok.

What's happened to my beautiful Turkey. We are a peace loving country. I am sure the majority of Turkish citizens do not want war.
