The Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) recent joint mobilization with Syrian Kurds could potentially cause further ethnic polarization along Turkey’s southern border, Turkish officials have said ahead of Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu’s key visit to Arbil next week.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has announced that Davutoğlu would pay a visit to northern Iraq by Aug. 1 at the very latest to “share Turkey’s sensitivities and determination on this issue” with local administration officials.

At a press conference yesterday before he left for Britain, Erdoğan further warned Iraqi Kurds, saying Ankara wanted Arbil to know that Turkey would no longer be responsible for anything
that happens.

The reason Davutoğlu would visit Arbil was to say, “Don’t let [anyone] take wrong steps. Don’t harm our feeling of confidence in you. On the contrary, we should take steps together in order to correct those mistakes,” the prime minister said.

Noting that there was already a Kurdish-origin Syrian heading the Syrian National Council, Erdoğan said, “It’s a wrong approach to set up a Syrian Kurdish National Council.”

Barzani remarks

Turkey was made uneasy by remarks from Iraqi Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani indicating that the KRG was training Kurdish-Syrian fighters who will then be sent back to defend Kurdish territory at home through an “Arbil agreement” between Iraqi Kurds and PYD, known to be an affiliate of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

No revolution of a group

“No one should try to turn the Syrian revolution into a revolution for a specific group,” a Turkish official told the Hürriyet Daily News after a July 25 security meeting, referring to the recent cooperation between Syrian and Iraqi Kurds.

It was decided that Davutoğlu would visit the northern Iraqi capital Arbil following the July 25 security summit, which especially focused on the PKK’s activities in Syria.

While Syria’s Kurds have stepped up to form an autonomous region in northern Syria similar to that in northern Iraq, Ankara does not intend to cease its support for the democratic transition in Syria. This process should be a “managed and controlled orderly transition” that does not drive forward the specific demands of particular ethnic or sectarian groups, the official said.

Following a stable transition process in the conflict-hit country, “The Syrian people should decide the future of the entire country,” the source said.

Ankara objects to the possibility of any safe haven for the PKK in northern Syria similar to that which the organization enjoys in the Kandil Mountains of northern Iraq.

In northern Iraq, Kurds have carved out a semiautonomous region, and fears are on the rise in Turkey that the same could happen on the country’s doorstep in northern Syria.

What rights Kurds in Turkey do not have that I have? Seperate flag, seperate state and seperate police and army are NOT basic rights. There is a reason why in their thousands of years of existence Kurds have never had a state or made a dent in human civilization, exept for death and destruction and mafia and honor killings. Turks were not the reason. It is a shame Turkey did not do to Kurdish Osama what USA did to the Arab one. First, Kurds need to solve their Turkish problem.

I am there with you dario Kurd! Of course they should have their free rights to do so but Autonomy is not something that can be done easily. It has to be done in a political manner i.e. by votes. If Turkey is to give Kurds their land will all the Kurds living in Turkey leave as well? These are important issues and cannot be handled quickly. Why should a united country be a fail? Why can't we live together in peace as a strong nation consisting of Kurds & Turks? The 1st thing we need is equality!

Tamer Aslantas Turk state uses PKK as an excuse to opress Kurds..Kurds in Turkey were more opressed before PKK was established in 1970 Kurds were called mountain turks..Turkey made a great effords to make iraq a centralised government and deny iraqi Kurds autonomy..but it has badly failed..it will fail again in Syria..the best for Turks is to grant Kurds autonomy and let them study in their mother tounge and manage their own area.

@dario Kurd "Turkey cannot succeed in fight own Kurds how on earth can fight with other Kurds too". Since when is Turkey fighting ALL Kurds in Turkey? We are fighting PKK whom are hiding between civilians. Civilians they aren't afraid of attacking when they don't do what they ask them to do. Kurdish civilians! They terrorize their own people neighbours family and force them to pick up arms. If PKK members were clear it wouldn't take a day for the TR military to wipe them out those cowards!

Tamer Aslantas Turks have to solve the problem with their own Kurds and not extend their opression and denial of Kurdish right to Kurds beyond their border, Turkey cannot succeed in fight own Kurds how on earth can fight with other Kurds too..remember If turkey interfere in Syria..Iran then will see this as an opportunity to come and support Assad regime. time has come for Ankara to free Ocalan and won Back hearts and minds of Kurds of Turkey and form a strategic alliance with all Kurds.

What do you think Mr Davutoglu?.Those are the early sign's of your faulty policies towards Syria. It is was very predictable!!. Braek down of Syria will cause chronic headache for the whole region except Israel. Neither saud;s nor Qataris will be affected, but Turkey and it's direct neighbours. Why should you insist to keep on?. There is a last chance for Turkey to play a positive role in this tragedy.Especially when we are witnessing the emergence of second"Kurdstan"in the region!

@dario Kurd Also Turks have the right to defend their rights. No one has the right to oppress another. Just as long Kurds don't attack Turks, Turks won't attack Kurds and vice versa. If Barzani thinks he is deceiving us he must be deceived himself, because Turkey will break him. I don't see why a Kurdish nation would be a threat. At least we'd know where the threat is coming from when something happens in Turkish borders. At the end we should all unite as brothers. Aren't we dario Kurd?

Great chance Turkey is again deceived. Helping building Northern Iraq, the Kurds got self-confidence. First step is now Syria. Then Turkey.
