The Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) has fined a number of channels, including Halk TV, for "harming the physical, moral and mental development of children and young people" by broadcasting coverage of the Gezi Park protests.

Ulusal TV, Cem TV and EM TV were also among the fined networks.

Halk TV, in particular, has gained unexpected popularity over its 24-hour live streaming of events around Istanbul, at a time when many mainstream media outlets gave little coverage to the ongoing protests.

The channel had been previously warned by RTÜK about a video clip the regulator deemed to be humiliating to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Although it does not have an organic link with the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), the station is known to have been financially supported by the CHP during the leadership of Deniz Baykal.

After being elected the new leader in May 2010, current CHP leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu reportedly cut financial support to the channel, which is known for its antigovernment broadcasts.

Brit in Turkey – of course, how silly of me! Yes the endless pap that the Turkish taxpayers are forced to fund is a disgrace, they’re probably streaming subliminal messages to the mindless viewers to brainwash them into continuing to vote AKP.

Brit in Turkey, not to mention the mind-numbing music channel when wanting to access teletext. Thank goodness for the volume off button.

Politico: TRT will never be shut down. The PM knows that if this were to happen he would lose the votes of the rest of the population as the voters would not be able to watch the mind-numbing soaps and game shows.

Mehmet Ud: Do not make up stuff. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. If you do not know where it is, it is in the a "western country". I was able to watch all the Occupy Wall Street events. Every charlatan including the "American Truthers" can get airtime and coverage if they try hard. They even cover "Flat Earth" folks from time to time. Just Google Dave Emory, and see what kind of wacky conspiracy theories he covers.

Cezer you beat me to it. I think it is hilarious too. How stupid do they think the Turkish public is to believe such nonsense?

“Greece shuts down State TV” the headlines roared– why not follow your neighbour’s lead Tayyip boy and shutdown TRT, they seem about as useless as an ashtray on a motorbike when it comes to covering the facts and speaking out against you and your corrupt government.

MEHMET UD You are sooooo wrong!!!! There was even a huge conspiracy theory show hosted by Jessie Ventura that looked at all the evidence regarding the 911 conspiracy, and the OW protests were on the evening news each and every night. First on the local news if there were any protesters in your area, and then on the evening national news as well, so don't spread this false propaganda, that is not true.

Its time to protest RTUK. This attack on democracy and freedom of speech is unjustifiable.
