The Turkish national women’s volleyball team claimed its third victory in a row at the European Games in Baku on June 19, by defeating Romania in a Group A game.

Turkey saw off Romania in straight sets, 25-16, 25-22 and 25-19, in one hour and 23 minutes at Crystal Hall.

The Turkish women, dubbed the “Sultans of the net,” lost their first game in the group 3-2 to Poland, before beating Italy and Belgium, also in straight sets.

Having garnered 10 points in four games, Turkey will play host Azerbaijan on Jun 21 for the group lead.

Meanwhile, Turkey’s Taha Akgül rounded off six days of wrestling by winning gold in the freestyle heavyweights on June18.

After the victory he ran around the ring with the flags of his homeland and Azerbaijan, much to the delight of the crowd at the Heydar Aliyev Arena.

Akgül’s easy win in the 125kg against Belarus’s Aleksei Shemarov took Turkey to third place in the wrestling medal table behind Azerbaijan, which added three bronzes on the night, and the clear leader, Russia.

Three more golds took Russia’s tally to 11, five more than the host country.
