Turkish police innovate with state-of-the-art ‘castle wall’

Police used an unusual vehicle to prevent potential demonstrators attempting to reach Ankara’s central Kızılay Square, which was banned for May Day gatherings.

A special multi-functional steel vehicle was placed at Sıhhiye Square, next to Kızılay Square, in the city, marking its "maiden" use during May Day. The vehicle is normally used as a security measure during football matches.

The police call the wall a “castle,” though many demonstrators and opinion leaders labeled it a “wall of shame.”

The vehicle is a truck that can be extended up to 14 meters horizontally, and up to four meters vertically due to its design. It is camera-equipped and can automatically spray tear gas when protesters push it.

Three of the vehicles were sent to Istanbul and one was used in Ankara.
