Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will speak on the phone with U.S. President Barack Obama to discuss the ongoing strikes on Gaza by Israel, daily Hürriyet has reported.

“We stand by our Gazan friends here as the Turkish government,” Erdoğan said today, adding that Israel had started striking Gaza and killing innocent people using fictional excuses ahead of elections, as had happened prior to the 2008 election.

“I will have a phone conversation with Obama. I will share these thoughts with him,” he said.   Erdoğan also said the U.N. Security Council and the dominant world powers should try to dissuade Israel from launching further attacks on Gaza, adding that no relationship existed between Turkey and Israel anymore.

“The U.N. Security Council is the best place to confront Israel, and countries that have relations with Israel should meet it too. We do not have any relations to meet Israel,” he said.

Turkey has also requested a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Erdoğan added.

ROGER Not all people who read and believe in the bible are "fanatics" just like not all people who pray five times a day and read the Quran are terrorist. The bible clearly states that he who turns their back on Israel will be shunnd by God. Now that is pretty clear. It doesn't take a Jewish lobby to influence God fearing people. There must also be a huge Eyptian lobby as we send millions of dollars to them and other middle eastern countires. RIMON had the best point-Gaza is open to Egypt?

Murat - you are again "confused" with the facts again, w.r.t to how it "starts" - first the missiles start, once a week, like a drop of water. Then the drip increases, with several a week, then once a day (usually at 8:00 when schools open), then several a day as casualties start, then we carry out an operation, trying to harm the Terrorists that shoot at us while the Arab world and other "anti Israelis/Jews" slam us, then rockets fire stops as terrorists crashed. Then half a year of silence, t

This is what happens when a politician is not in the death grip of the Zionist lobby, he can say aloud that Emperor has no cloths on. Let us recall that this flare up, like many others, started with Israeli assasination of a high level leader in Gaza. What about the rights of Palestinians? Instead of calling for the murderous Israeli leaders prompt arrest and appearance in front of a UN tribunal, brave American congressmen stand behind the villain. Then all wonder why is USA disliked so much.

roger, not literal olives. the mount of olives. it keeps the fundamentalist christians happy, sort of like davutoglu promising to pray in al-quds makes turkish fundamentalist muslims happy. also, america can continue to exploit the world's resources while giving israel 3 billion dollars a year in order to keep the fight over there. the muslims (saudis(and not just them)) have much more money than the jews, and yet the 'zionists' are in 'control'.

@Roger Hardings about the "Zionist lobby" controlling america and the world, bla bla bla. Why don't you read other books than the infamous and antisemitic "elderly of Zions" book? Might bring you some perspective. Might may you a bit less hateful towards "Zionists", or Jews, or Israelis... just might. Not that I'm counting on it....

Hi RIMON TREE, Why is the US such a staunch bastion of support for Israel? The influence of American Jewry in Washington? The unholy alliance with Christian fundamentalists? The amount of money they contribute to election campaigns? Zionist lobby wields disproportionate political power in Washington. Israel feels free to act brutally. With the White House, the Senate, the Congress and much of the American media in Zionist hands, the lives of others do not count as much as their own. GOOD LUCK.

Hello SID MARK & STELLA MARIS, I have my grievances about PM Erdogan. However, let me deal with Netanyahu first. A lot of western leaders think King Bibi is a compulsive liar. Ask Obama or Sarkozy in confidence. They will confirm. Some others think Bibi would better fit into a world-class Circus. I personally think Netanyahu is a WAR CRIMINAL. Should be tried in The Hague for countless war crimes against Palestinians. Greetings.

@Sid He certainly is! And that for several years now. I do not know any other politician (except the esteemed FM of course) of whom people talk with so little respect. Lots of comics and jokes circling here in Europe as well.

NYT: " The US House of Representatives decided Friday to unanimously support Israel, after a similar resolution was introduced by the Senate on Thursday. According to the resolution, the House of Representatives firmly supports Israel's right to defend itself and its citizens against acts of terror." Further comment not necessary....

Hi AMERICAN, Israel violates international law and defies numerous UN resolutions. Occupies conquered lands, conducts extra-judicial killings and repeats military aggression. Still US politicians and media support Israel and defend its policies. USA provides Israel with crucial military, diplomatic and financial backing, including more than $3 billion each year in aid. Despite major financial problems in the US. WHY? FOR PR OR OLIVES?
