A Republican People’s Party (CHP) deputy has suggested lifting a ban on betting company advertisements on sports jerseys in international games played in Turkey.

Istanbul deputy Sezgin Tanrıkulu’s suggestion came on the eve of a Champions League quarter final match between Galatasaray and Spain’s Real Madrid, which normally carries the “bwin” ads on its jerseys. The Turkish media has been discussing whether the Galacticos will use its original jersey in April 9 match the Türk Telecom Arena. Real Madrid hosts Galatasaray April 3 in the first leg of the quarter-final matchup.

Tanrıkulu said in a statement April.1 that the regulation required an updating.

Sevilla, another Spanish team, was not permitted to use its chest ad in a Champions League game against Fenerbahçe in Istanbul in 2008.

The Turkish code rules that those who promote betting via ads should be sentenced to jail and fines.
