American TV station NBC's Turkish correspondent Aziz Akyavaş has been released after going missing in Syria last week, daily Hürriyet reported today. It is thought that he was being held by the Syrian authorities.

Akyavaş is currently waiting at the Cilvegözü border gate, reports said.

Akyavaş was reporting from Syria along with NBC Middle East bureau chief Richard Engel when he went missing in Syria on Dec. 13.

Engel was also freed after a firefight between his captors and Syrian rebels, his employer NBC News said today, according to AFP.
