Turkish director Belma Baş’s film “Zefir” (Zephyr) won the multiculturalism award at the 11th Mediterranean Film Festival, which was held in Rome between Nov. 19 and 27.

Starring Vahide Gördüğüm, Cem Yılmaz, Tülay Kaptan and Cemil Kaptan, the film previously won awards at the Thessaloniki and Kazan film festivals.

The film tells the story of Zephyr, a strong-willed adolescent girl, who spends her summer at her grandparents’ country home in the foothills of Turkey’s eastern Black Sea mountains.

She roams around carefree and helps her grandparents with daily chores. All the while she deeply longs for her mother and hopes she will soon come to take her home.

Her mother finally shows up, but only to say farewell before going faraway for overseas volunteer work. But Zephyr’s determination not to let her mother go, no matter what, is so strong it leads to tragic consequence.
