Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arınç emphasized the importance of conjugal unions for society, even at early ages, speaking at two ceremonies in different cities over the weekend.

“We believe that marriage, even at early ages, is a very rewarding thing,” he said at the wedding ceremony of a son of Justice and Development Party (AKP) deputy Kerim Özkul in the Central Anatolian province of Konya.

Marriage helps strengthen the foundations of society and raise new generations, he later said at a circumcision ceremony in Bursa.

However, unlike Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Arınç refrained from giving specific advise as to the number of children couples should have. “We don’t have a number [of children] in our mind and we don’t necessarily want to increase it like prime minister does,” he said.

Erdoğan repeats on many occasions his call for Turkish families to bring up at least three children.

Speaking at the same ceremony in Bursa, Deputy PM Arınç also said he was upset that the ceremony had begun with the march marking the 10th anniversary of the foundation of the Turkish Republic, rather than the Ottoman military band march.

MARA: I will do precisely that as information gleaned from that source would be useful towards the development of a range of articles and essays I have written on analogous topics. Many thanks.

CHRIS It has been reported on in this paper before. I unfortunately can't remember if it is the Sabanci Foundation sponsoring it in Turkey. It is a World wide movement. I now am on their email list since I donated some monies to their cause. Google it and there is a place where you can specify a country.

I wouldn't be surprised if AKP legalises paedophilia as it is in Saudi Arabia.

MARA: I said 'award' implying a medal, not 'reward'. As for the programme you describe, that sounds a superb initiative and one I should like to find out more about with a view to covering the topic in the newspaper titles I write for as I have covered some women's rights topics in recent months.

in the western countries, schools dish out contraceptive pills to girls young as 11 and yet if two couple marry at age 15 they get disgusted. Basically put a blind eye to underage sex but ban under age marriage! well done

CHRIS I don't know of any reward "yet", but we should all(I am) donating heavily to the Girls not Brides foundation in Turkey that does provide substantial monies first the the unmarried girl of 18 and then to her family if she has an education. Great program. If you can't change this backward mentality, then you can at least reward those who stay the course.

FALK Other peoples' idiot behavior doesn't make it right. Girls should not be able to obtain the proper license to marry until the age of 18 period, regardless of how many cows her parents have, or who approves. Simple end of story. All religious men should be banned from their profession, and heavily punished for marrying anyone without the proper license AND proper proof of age must be recorded. But then again -burasi Turkey, and proper proof of age would be her Father's word. Pathetic.

unbelivable, its all chps fault, their misconducts abuse of kurdish rights coup mentality in the past has led akp to win easy race, conservatives naturally are picking akp kurds prefer akp over chp even some liberals has voted for akp,now we have sad situation with akps side effects with no credible opposition against them, maybe taksim platformu will be good alternative to so called socialist chp, who knows
