Turkey’s possible membership in the Shanghai Cooperation would be interesting, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Jan. 28.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had recently said in a television interview that Turkey is seriously considering seeking membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) as an alternative at a time when the EU’s future looks increasingly dim.

When asked during the State Department’s weekly press briefing whether Nuland had any comment on the issue, she said it would be interesting. “I didn’t see that comment by Erdoğan. Obviously, it would be interesting, given the fact that Turkey’s also a NATO member. We’ll have to see how that goes.”

Turkey will leave the NATO after they join the Shanghai Five organisation. The army of Turkey is the number 6 strongest of the world. And China Russia India Turkey etc can combine their powers. That wil be a major blow to the west. And the ennemy's of Turkey will need to watch out. Especialy Israel and Greece etc. Because Turkey wil not listen to NATO annymore , nor to USA/EU.

@supertramp: Turkey cannot defend itself, so NATO helps her. If she thinks she can deal with another military security group on the same time, go ahead, choose what you want. Only both SCO and NATO wont accept that. Good luck.

For the Past 50 odd years (especially during the Cold war years) Turkey has been a weapons importer from the U S and the E U and a loyal friend too. Yet the allies can chose where, when, and with-whom to trade even with the ex enemies (the Commos) Just the same when Turkey trays trading with the East, North, or any one else for that matter her Partners accuse her of being a traitor. Furthermore after 50 years her allies are still reluctant to shear their technologies with Turkey.

@ johanna, turkeys allience with nato doesnt not stop her having interest in sco, its an alternative to eu, not to nato which is amilitary organization you act like turkey owes you something? with afew patriot you must think you own turkey :) assume a member of nato in conflict with israel you think that member state can count on nato? turkey has the right to seek membership and allience where she sees fit, if you dont like it i'd say too bad :)

The EU is bankrupt. The future is in the east. Only China will have a greater economy then EU+USA together. Also military the east will be much more stronger then the west. It is a good choice to join the Shanghai Five for Turkey.

@oz man: SCO isn't a boy scouts club, its NATO's direct opponent. A NATO of which you have binding agreements and shared intel. Thats so difficult to understand?

Interesting as in the Chinese proverb and curse, May you live in interesting times. This was the least severe of 3 curses, the other two being, May you come to the attention of those in authority, and May you find what you are looking for.
