The Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) has put a stop to the publication and sale of all books in its archives that support the theory of evolution, daily Radikal has reported.

The evolutionist books, previously available through TÜBİTAK's Popular Science Publications’ List, will no longer be provided by the council.

The books have long been listed as “out of stock” on TÜBİTAK's website, but their further publication is now slated to be stopped permanently.

Titles by Richard Dawkins, Alan Moorehead, Stephen Jay Gould, Richard Levontin and James Watson are all included in the list of books that will no longer be available to Turkish readers.

In early 2009, a huge uproar occurred when the cover story of a publication by TÜBİTAK was pulled, reportedly because it focused on Darwin’s theory of evolution.

The incident led to intense criticism and resulted in finger-pointing by various officials of that publication and its parent institute.

A few months later, the article in question appeared as the publication’s cover story.

@mary mcg Yes,but the kind of Christian that does not believe in a literal interpretation of the Old Testament, especially Genesis. Modern Muslim interpretations of the Qur'an may allow for belief in evolution but not all unproven assumptions that are disputed by scientists. What is essential for Muslims is the belief in the unity of God, the prophethood of Muhammad, and other prophets, angels, divine scriptures,,the sinlessness of humanity, resurrection,j Judgment Day,and heaven and hell.

@ Mara Mcglothin: 1. many christian sects excommunicate those who accept modern science. more than half of Americans deny basic science. And fundamentalist religions in the USA get laws passed every year which take up the courts time and money to be overturned. thank god, courts to date never wavered in denying religionists establishing their religions by law. not formally de jure but de facto science is banned from universities and high schools all over the country even in public schools.

Psy Borg; You should keep in mind that moderate islamism in combination with pro-Westernism or pro-globalism attitude is the preference and enforcement of USA and leading European countries as this complies best with their interests. Modernist islam (about half of Turkey are modernists) or radical islam is neither desired nor encouraged. Just watch what is going on in North African and Middle Eastern countries and please try to see the back of the stage. Ali Kadioglu 1/21/2013

It is not just a theory it actually explains the diversity of life on Earth offering tangible evidence. The bottom line is those who give into pressure to appease the ruling elite by stopping printing and distribution of the book (“Origin of Species”) should be ashamed of themselves. They are not real scientists but just a bunch of yes men. On the other hand it could be good business opportunity for an entrepreneur to do what TUBITAK decided not to do, print and distribute the book,

Why waste your time with Darwin when it is all in the Holy Qur'an written 1200 years previously ! Evolution, Relativity, Quantum Physics, Astrophysics, Molecular Biology is all there...! And more if you know how to read ! Read ! This is why the Moslem countries are the most advanced in Science and Technology in the world+

Science is science - the point is, liike soap operas the more you ban them the more interesting they become. And everything can be accessible in pirate form on the net. The youth are better than their contemporaries - the old gits just haven't worked that out yet.

Psy Borg...You can say the same thing about the USA that it is backsliding into ignorance, superstition and Christianists. The science books in Texas (America's largest) are removing evolution theory, religious leaders in Florida, Indiana, Utah, Ohio, and other states are leading efforts to rewrite science books to reflect creationism. Evolution vs creation discussion will go on for many years; singling out Turkey is wrong; Turkey is in midst of discussion like USA and other EU nations!

SINAN OSMAN If you believe in evolution you might not be able to be Muslim, but you can believe in evolution and still be a Christian, so you statement is false. So speak for youself.
