Members of the ruling Justice and Development Party have proposed a series of changes to the Constitution Conciliation Council that may gravely limit press freedom in Turkey, daily Hürriyet reported.

The proposed changes will allow the government to limit press freedom in a variety of scenarios that include cases of "national security" and "public morals."

Public order, prevention of crime and ensuring the objectivity of judicial authorities may also be used by the government to interfere with the press, the daily said. Publications containing "child abuse, sexual content and violence" will also be open to state limitation.

The abolition of laws exempting publication houses from providing financial securities and permits before opening were also proposed by AKP deputies.

The AKP proposal also foresees the ending of laws regarding the "protection of tools of press," allowing police forces to confiscate all materials from locations as diverse as publication houses and press vehicles.

The people writing posts regarding this story have to remember the Turkish people want and voted for AKP and are not concerned about such issues,if they where they would speak out against such archaic measures being forced upon them. They do not, so they are happy with what is going on around them.

I don't see what difference it would make. Journalists are already on a short leash and unable to report on anything worthwhile. When was the last time a Deputy was held to account by the media, a corporate boss, a public official? Newspapers print statistics, gossip and very rarely some opinion pieces that get close to genuine criticism but still have to be carefully edited. Satire, investigative journalism, objective analysis....none exist in the media anyway.

Great idea JOHANNA! The whole situation is very sad. Turkey is on the threshold of becoming a full democracy and now the AKP has finally decided to get "off the train". Citizens must push for the removal of 301 from the constitution and for more freedoms. Yeah MARK I guess the esteemed PM is off to Russia for some tutelage.

Step by step sultanate is coming back, to be followed by Halifate maybe. These are the same people who complain about Kemalists and the heavy hand of state. Each action creates its own reaction. AKP is slowly creating its own antidode.

Yet another nail in the coffin of freedom of speech and freedom of expression in Turkey. Mr. Erdogan's AKP is indeed tightening the censorship noose on its citizens. The EU's echelons will be delighted... Regards

@Mark Tak, you misunderstand me. I admire Hürriyet; I do not admire Erdoğan. I was making a joke. The point is that a news article about AKP restricting the press is no more "news" than an article informing us that water is wet, or that dogs bark.

This must be a very economical headline for Hürriyet. They save lots of money, because like "Erdoğan Imprisons Critics" or "England Lose on Penalties", you only need to write it once and can then use it over and over again.
