LEADING NEWS SOURCE FOR TURKEY AND THE REGION

NURAY MERT > Turkey’s failed visions

I do not think that Egypt has replaced the “aspired” role of Turkey as regional leader, as is now thought given Egypt emerging as a successful broker for a cease fire between Israel and Hamas, because Turkey never stood a chance of being a regional leader.

In fact, no non-Arab state could play such a role. Besides, Egypt should always have been thought of playing a major role concerning the Palestinian issue even if Turkey’s ambition to step into a regional role has not been challenged. Thinking that Turkey could play a major role in the Gaza conflict is no different than expecting Egypt to play a major role in the Cyprus problem as columnist Kerim Balcı of daily Zaman suggested.

From the beginning, Turkey had a limited (although important) scope for political action in the region. Turkey has been credited with providing balance to the regional influence of another non-Arab actor, namely Iran. Indeed, Turkey played its role by challenging Israel and managed to channel the sympathy of the so-called “Arab street” to Turkey. Nevertheless, not only did Turkey overdo it and loose credit as a mediator in regional conflicts, it also caused a lot of things to change dramatically after the Arab Spring.

The most important outcome of the Arab Spring has been the return of Egypt as a regional actor despite of all its problems and weaknesses. The rise to power of the Muslim Brotherhood created a lot of domestic concerns in Egypt, but the party has been an international asset for the Palestinian conflict. Only the Muslim Brotherhood could have a real influence on Hamas and it has worked so far. So much so that it triggered some conspiracy theories claiming that everything was a perfect design to play into the hands of Israelis.

Nonetheless, nothing is either designed or perfect. The ceasefire is delicate and the peaceful solution is still very far. Turkey is so self centered that we more focus on the declining role of Turkey and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan rather than considering the prospects of regional crises and their possible impact on Turkey as well as on the whole region. Finally, the failed dreams of regional leadership were mostly about the failed vision of regional and global politics. A similar failure of domestic political vision and the combination of failed visions may lead to a worse end.

Absorbed Middle Eastern Arab speaking nations will better to have Egypt as a regional leader as Turkey now is a trading nation with no interest of neo colonialism and getting misconstrued on every sentence .

i hope for turkey it becomes a better and more powerful and influential regional power, as it deserves. but turkey has to deal with it's own problems first. then it can deal with others'. @pessimist johanna, how come the american wasp was founded? if you want to discuss about rascism, please check your country's history and present first.

Turkey's effort to be a significant regional "power" ended with Turkey's war against the Syrian people. It may have gained the support f the corrupt dictators in the GCC, but lots the Arab street. Morsi may fare no better, as the negotiated ceasefire seems to have been a tool to enable him to make himself dictator. In any case, Israel will soon find a way around it. They always do.

I think there is a confusion about Turkey as a regional power, which it is, and the aspirations of a regional leader status that mostly outsiders have assumed for Turkey which never was real or true. When we say Turkey is a bridge between East and West, people stil do not appreciate the implications and the significance.

Egyptians role as a strong mediating power could be very short lived since Morsi declared himself to be the virtual Pharoah of Egypt. The mass show of support reported in the news was counter-acted by mass support for the opposition. There seems to be a 50/50 situation like in Turkey where the 50% in power forget about the views of the other half of the population. Egypt is heading for more strife and will be weakened as a result.

If you have a Vision, its not for some people only. Turkey is solely promoting the Turkish equivalent of the American WASP. Thats nearsightedness and borders racism. Its a propagandist mission. Indeed mrs. Mert, its not even a vision. That belongs to wise people only. Not to a lone Street fighter Jack.

I guess that a lot of the cries about Turkey's leadership role in the Middle East are just shortsighted or motivated by Schadenfreude. You are right about Egypt and Morsi being the right country in the right place at the right time. Apart from that what mediation or leadership role could there be in a dispute for a country that calls one side 'a terrorist state'? When you say that, you show you playing some other game. Turkey chose to stay on the sidelines and should have indicated this.
