Turkish troops pounded targets in Syria on Thursday morning in reprisal for cross-border fire that killed five Turkish civilians the previous day, a security source said.

"Artillery fire resumed at 0300 GMT this morning," the source told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Several Syrian soldiers have been killed as a result of overnight Turkish shelling across the border, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights watchdog said earlier, without giving an exact figure.

Turkey has demanded that the UN Security Council take action against Damascus after Wednesday's attack, which saw mortar fire from Syria kill five Turkish nationals, including a mother and her three children.

It marked the first time that Turkish citizens have been killed as a result of fire from its war-torn neighbour and led to a sharp escalation of tensions between the former allies.

Later Thursday the Turkish parliament was due to consider a government request to approve cross-border military action.

Before Wednesday, the most serious clash between Syria and Turkey was in June, when Syria shot down a Turkish fighter jet, killing both crewmen.

North of Aleppo, on Saturday, waves of terrorists came into Syrian territory from Turkey and most were exterminated, including Turkish nationals among the terrorist hordes. Such is the behaviour of NATO and its minions today. Strange, when they get what they deserve, they run screaming like the cowards they are. Pravda reporting today

The shell that killed a women and her children came from a Syrian forces mortar or tank, the rebels do not have such heavy weapons. Its the duty of the Turkish goverment to protect its citizens from any foreign attack, and retaliant and even declare war on that nation.either of which the turkish goverment has done,It should be a clear sign to Turkeys enemies that Turks dont play around if threatened or attacked. The turkish goverment so far as done then right things to protect its citizens.

Which is the most aggressive country in the region, the most militant? Turkey would even like to drag NATO in this mess. It is clear the AKP want to dominate the area, if not by peaceful means than by any means necessary.

Turkish government is opening up 4 fronts of war for herself. PKK is highly active and giving hard time to army, Syrian front started to burn, Iraq started to smoke and least desired rising sectarian division among population. Armed elite is decaying in jails and on duty army show least morale to take any adventure. It just follow orders not to be prosecuted. Where Turkey is heading is dead end for progressive and developed Turkey. Why Turks are silent for all this nonsense: I WONDER FOR THAT?

Based on the words and regrets of the Syrian Information Minister, it appears very likely that the Turks bit the bait the Syrian rebels put out in the form of a mortar attack. The notion that Assad's forces decided to all of a sudden attack a Turkish border town is senseless. It would be to Turkey's best interests to stop this war action as soon as possible. Regards

Turkey, in shelling targets in Syria, just gave a different focus for Assad to concentrate his people on. He will be telling them that Turkey is preparing to invade and declare war. Nothing brings a people together more than a threat to their nation. This is exactly what Assad wants, Turkey's playing into his hands.

Everyone thinks that the cross-border fire that killed our Turkish citizens came from the rebels with bases next to the border that we have been feeding and giving guns to. Why don't we throw them out of Turkey and stop supplying arms and money to them??!!
