Turkish national women’s volleyball team was knocked out of the 2013 FIVB World Grand Prix after a 3-2 defeat to Italy Aug.18.

Turkey completed the tournament with six wins and three defeats to finish seventh as the team missed out on a chance to qualify for the final round.

Italy joined host Japan, China, United States, Serbia and Brazil in the six-team round that will be played in Sapporo between Aug. 28 and Sept. 1.

Turkey tried to stage a comeback against Italy after losing the first two sets 25-17, 25-18, and went on to win the next two sets 25-17 and 25-15. However, Italians had just enough to see off the “Sultans” 15-13 to book their place in Sapporo.

Turkey will now complete the tournament in seventh spot with the top five and host Japan bound to take the top six spots.

Last year, Turkey scored its best-ever performance in the competition, taking home a bronze medal.
