Turkey is a critical member of NATO’s southern flank, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov has said during a visit to Turkish counterpart Binali Yıldırım in Ankara.

“Turkey is our partner on the southern wing of NATO. The region is definitely unimaginable without Turkey. So, I look on the bright side of the incident,” Borissov said during a press conference with Turkish prime minister on June 13, state-run Anadolu Agency has reported, adding that he expects more progress.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu also participated in the meeting at Çankaya Mansion.

Yıldırım discussed the necessity of cooperation for improving the relationship with Bulgaria, noting that Sofia showed that it was a real friend.

“You clearly condemned the July 15 [2016] coup attempt and showed your support by coming to our country. You showed that you were a real friend,” he said.

Yıldırım also said talks with the European Union were continuing at the ministerial level.
