Turkey envoy takes office in IMF top board

WASHINGTON – Anadolu Agency
Treasury Undersecretary İbrahim Çanakçı, who has been a key figure in reducing government debt over the past decade, has taken his office at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as an executive director.

With the appointment of Çanakçı, Turkey has started to be directly represented in the main governing body of the international lender.

The executive board is responsible for the IMF’s day-to-day business. It is composed of 24 directors, appointed or elected by member countries, and a managing director, who serves as its chairman, according to the IMF website.

Countries with large economies have their own executive director, but most countries are grouped in constituencies representing four or more countries.
