The Turkish Armed Forces have begun working on a project to develop an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), broadcaster NTV reported on its website today.

A decision to launch the project was made in a July 17 meeting of the Defense Industry Executive Board, headed by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Chief of General Staff Gen. Necdet Özel. Erdoğan had previously requested that the military develop missiles with a 2,500-kilometer range.

The board decided to form a satellite launch center that would have a two-fold effect on Turkey's aerospace and military endeavors. First, the center will enable Turkey to place its own satellites in orbit, and second, the center will allow the Turkish military to launch missiles that can navigate outside of the Earth's atmosphere. Attaining an ICBM launch capability is reportedly the chief aim of the satellite launch center.

The Turkish Defense Ministry, the Defense Industry Undersecretariat and the Scientific and Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK), have been jointly working on the project for some time.

The report said Ankara could cooperate with an undisclosed Eastern European country to develop the satellite launch center.

The ICBM project, meanwhile, has sought to improve on the SOM cruise missile developed by TÜBİTAK. The SOM cruise missile has a current range of 300 kilometers. The range would first be increased to 1,500 and later to 2,500 kilometers within the project, according to the report.

The report did not elaborate on whether the SOM's planned 2,500-kilometer range would be increased even further or whether its increased range would be utilized to develop an ICBM separately, as missiles with ranges under 5,500 kilometers are not considered "intercontinental."

The countries known to currently have ICBMs in their military arsenal are Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, China and India.

This is EXCELLENT! I love it. Heavy lift rockets for satellites are amazing and will help our space program. We will have our astronaut program too! And for you foreigners who think your dissuading Turks with your sanctimonious please for education then you must think we're fools.

Besides being very profitable for the economy, creating jobs, tax, export. It's beneficial for ANY country to be able to send their own satellites to space without the need of third parties. Hahah it's funny all our Greek critics are such experts in economy... Hhahah I think our neighbors were so busy worrying about our army and economy their forgot their own poverty stricken country

ICBMs what are they for? All the countries who means us harm is at our door step. Why do we need ICBMs? You can drive a truck load of explosives straight through the border posts they are that close. I don't get it. If you are in charge you can do what you like and spend the nations wealth as you like, that is not democracy. There should be a referendum on big spending projects that the country can ill afford. There are host of other issues that the money can be better used.

"Turkey's south eastern rural expance is worst than the poorest 3rd world countries when it comes to infrastructure" Yet another rapidly anti-Turkish rhetoric by a Greek commentator who is blatantly writing here only to express his negative views on Turkey, while never offering an iota of evidence to back up his claims. Let me enlighten you, as a person who has been to the region, what you wrote is indisputably FALSE

its so funny that most of the people dont know where our mordern technology comes from... this military technology will be a catalyst in term of engineering. even the internet u right now use was develop for a military purpose... every country needs those steps to develop and strength their economy... these are basic needs which turkey doesnt really have, so its only natural that they want to develop such weapons because the benefits are huge in terms of military and public technology

What purpose would such a weapon serve? Turkey's south eastern rural expance is worst than the poorest 3rd world countries when it comes to infrastructure yet millions upon millions are destined to be spent on worthless killing implements. How sad and unfair to those who are hoping for earthquake relief, healthcare, education and better living conditions. Regards

Noone in the world like Turks except muslims from europe, asia, mid east. So ICMB, nukes are MUST HAVE! The only reason why USA "likes" Turkey is because of Turkish Armed Forces and Economy.

Turkey should start making nuclear weapons, since the missiles will be ready soon. Just to show that anyone killing our civilians or shooting our planes is in big trouble. Some have it, some are working hard on making it, that means that we also have to make it. I am sure Turkey has the know how, but otherwise Pakistan will help Turkey for sure.
