A Turkish Airlines pilot managed to smoothly land an Istanbul-İzmir plane as one of the engines caught fire after being hit by lightning during a flight on the night of Jan. 24.

The plane took off from Istanbul around 11 p.m. and was airborne when lightning struck. One of the engines caught fire and passengers began panicking onboard. The pilot, however, managed to land the plane at İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport with no further problems. Firefighters immediately intervened.

Bertan Atay, one of the passengers onboard who captured the whole event on his camera, said nothing else abnormal occurred during the flight and the lights remained on.

Turkish airlines is a great airline with great pilots, most of them military trained. Tukish airlines has invested billions in new aircraft and crew training,I have no bother flying Turkish,I would feel worried flying in a greek or greek cypriot plane,as they are all Bankrupt and save money on routine mantanace, which Turkish airlines doed not!!

Aircraft fly in to bad weather all the time . Not just in Turkey but around the world by all airlines . The aircraft are equipped to deal with it and crew are trained for it. Your desperation to bad mouth anything Turkish is noted.

ERDOGAN Yeah, You can read on Yahoo finance page the Top Ten most dangerous airlines. THY is number 7 with 6 planes lost and 189 dead. LARA It is always better to do things faster than to take the time for everyone to be safe. It is across all sectors, even in housing and government owned businesses as well. Faulty wiring, building in a flood plain, and the list goes on and on. The shipyard in Tuzla is also a death trap. No Occupational Health and Safety Commission at all.

Again, glad there were no casualties! Again, safety problems! I thought all airplanes were protected against lightning strikes!? Though the pilot did a super job by managing the landing quickly, but isn't he also supposed to have avoided areas where lightnings are expected after reading the weather forecast or am I misinformed? Anyway, Turkey seems to have a serious problem with safe thinking in almost every angle. There should be a big campaigne to straighten this out.
