A child laborer died while working in a plastic manufacturing plant in the southern province of Adana on March 15.

Ahmet Yıldız, 13, worked at the factory every day after school for 100 Turkish Liras (less than $60) per week. Yıldız died from heavy injuries sustained after his head was caught in a pressing machine.

When Yıldız was taken to the hospital, doctors were told that his wounds were caused by a car accident, a police investigation revealed. The owner of the plant, identified as Ali K., was detained as part of the investigation launched into the incident.

Meanwhile, Yıldız’s parents said that they did not know their child was doing heavy-duty labor at the factory. "We thought he was bringing cups of tea and cleaning the place. It seems that they put him in charge of the pressing machine," said his brother, Tahir Yıldız.

Thanks to the weekly wage, Ahmet Yıldız, the youngest of seven children, was able to pay for his school expenses, his brother added.

There must be regulations put in place to prevent children working in industrial settings period.

"His flesh is yours, bones are mine", which is what fathers say to the business owners when they bring their kids to the work place/site. They are treated as flesh and bones, more or less.

This is very sad. At least this boy was going to school and it sounds like the parents weren't forcing him to work to help out the family. It mentioned on the news that he wanted to buy a cell phone. It is good for young people to be able to make some spending money but there should be more regulations.. Also it should be illegal for people under a certain age to get married.

I didn't know kids were allowed to work in factories in Turkey. They need to outlaw kids and give them other options to make a living such as delivering newspapers, tellers, sales, etc. In Somalia kids are soldiers for al shabab but no one ever employs them in the few factories even before the collapse of the state. However, most 16 year old do drive buses, trucks, etc.
