Third İhsanoğlu Gold Medal to be presented in Brazil in July The İhsanoğlu Gold Medal, granted in an international competition held once every four years for doctoral theses on the history of science in Islam, will be offered for the third time in a ceremony during the 25th International Congress of History of Science, Technology and Medicine (ICHSTM) in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro in July.

The medal, named after Professor Ekmeleddin İhsanoğlu, who was Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation from 2004 to 2014, is the first award ever to be named after a living Turkish scholar.

This year’s ceremony will be attended by İhsanoğlu himself along with many other scholars from all over the world.

The award was established in 2007 by the International Society for the History of Philosophy of Science (HOPOS) and was offered for the first time in 2009.

The first medal was given in the Hungarian capital of Budapest to Jose Bellver Martinez, a Spanish national, from Barcelona University.

Dr. Marc Oliveras Busquets, also a Spanish national, became the recipient of the second İhsanoğlu Gold Medal awarded in 2013 at Manchester University in the U.K. for his work in the history of sciences in Islamic civilization.
