Ten-year detention valid for another year, Deputy PM Bozdağ says

ANKARA - Hürriyet
The Constitutional Court has ruled that the 10-year rule for arrests without a verdict is too long, but it has not stated that five years is OK, Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdağ has said, with regard to the high court’s recent annulment of the 10-year imprisonment period in terror and organized crimes. The new limit to arrest without verdict periods has yet to be decided, but one year has been granted for implementation of the new ruling.

“When the court reached this decision, it granted a one year grace period for the legislative organ to make the necessary arrangements. In other words, this decision will go into effect in one year. But while the court annulled the 10 year period, it did not decrease it to five years. It pointed out that there could be a reasonable, moderate period in between the two. We have to see the justified decision in order to take a step,” Bozdağ said.
