| The most recent tax fine levied by the government of Turkey against the Doğan Media Group, a sum of $2.5 billion that comes on top of a $500 million levied in February, is a matter of dramatic scope and impact. It is a transparent assault on freedom of the press. It is also an existential threat directed at the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review, a member of DMG. Despite this unprecedented exercise of state power, we continue to maintain our commitment to democracy and free expression and a style of journalism that reflects this commitment. This requires us to the provide a forum to all sides in this still-unfolding drama, which continues on a daily basis. In the face of overwhelming national and international interest in this case, we have created this special topics page. It includes all coverage of the issue made to date by the Daily News, as well as all commentary. It also includes links to foreign assessment of the case in both English and many other non-Turkish languages. -David Judson Editor-in-Chief Hürriyet Daily News |
