A top Syrian minister held out the prospect of strongman Bashar al-Assad stepping down as part of a negotiated settlement to 17 months of bloodshed that activists say has killed 23,000 today.

"As far as his resignation goes -- making the resignation itself a condition for holding dialogue means that you will never be able to reach this dialogue. But any problems can be discussed during negotiations. We are even ready to discuss this issue," Deputy Prime Minister Qadri Jamil said in comments translated into Russian.

There is no way that that man is going to be allowed to leave Syria. He will take his last stand in Syria and as he sat at the Eid prayer on Monday I hope his heart filled with dread. The Russians at this point will say anything and they quite frankly don't care how they might appear to anyone else so the floating of this ridiculous proposition posited in this story is par for the course. They intend to leave Al Assad right where he is, seatbelted in his own personal clown with no way out.

The headline news does not reflect the interview given by Kadri Jamil for Russia Today.

Is it possible for Assad to just walk away from all this bloodshed? Will the world or Syrians allow this? Assad should be put as example for ALL Leaders of World to make sure peaceful demonstrations should not be stopped through intimidation, dead people. Democracy will come to Syria - Amen!
