The Syrian regime has fired up to 90 Scud-type ballistic missiles into residential areas in the last two months, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said in a recent television interview.

“The Syrian regime first used snipers, then artillery, tanks and then jets, helicopters. Now it is using Scud missiles. Al-Assad’s forces have fired 85-90 Scud missiles in the last two months,” the foreign minister said in an interview with private broadcaster NTV. “They press a button in Damascus and the missile lands in a residential area in Aleppo and kills civilians.”

A Turkish official told Hürriyet Daily News last month that the Syrian government has fired more than 40 Scud-type ballistic missiles at rebel positions in the country’s north in the last two months. The government has been forced to use the Scuds because it has lost control of the cities, the official said, adding that it previously used warplanes until opposition militants acquired the ability to respond with anti-aircraft weapons.

At least 33 people were killed on Feb. 19 after an apparent surface-to-surface missile strike on a residential area of the northern city of Aleppo.

Davutoğlu also said that totalitarian regimes won’t be able to survive in the Twitter era, referring to embattled leader Bashar al-Assad. “Egypt was an authoritarian regime that at least allowed opposition to be in politics, but tried to prevent their participation in administration. Syria was a totalitarian regime that ignored opposition and perceives society as a single structure,” Davutoğlu said.

Vargen Vargen, I take your point about RTE slamming the international community for not stepping in, but I'm not sure he had in mind an occupation force which Georgios Milopoulos was talking about. I believe, at least I'd like to believe, that he wanted an intervention similar to Libya where NATO gave aerial support but there was no invasion, unlike Iraq, and all the fighting was done by the Libyans. Similarly all the fighting should be done by Syrian rebels who clearly need more support.

@Georgios are you advocating an armed push by Turkish & NATO forces? If so you must be either badly informed or a supporter of terrorism. Most European voters are against any interference in Syria (total opposite of what their leaders say), and most people understand that the Syrian Government is a legitimate government and that the rebels only represent a minority of the people. Leave Syria to mend her self and concentrate on your own domestic matters.

Baris. Turkey is wary about an armed intervention. RTE has been slamming the international comunity for at least half a year for not stepping in and solving the problem by force. It is the West (which RTE slams) who does not want to step in.

I see Ahmet Davutoğlu found himself a worthy occupation - to count SCUDs fired by his old friend Bashar.

Georgios, there are many problems with military intervention in Syria, which has strong support from Russia, Iran and China. Intervention requires UN Resolution which the Security Council members Russia and China do not agree to. Plus, any intervention is likely to result in chaos for many years to come. Syria is similar in demography to Iraq which has turned into a mess. Turkey with its long border is understandably wary of direct intervention since this will cause years of problems.

This joke in Syria must have an end. Turkey, be an affected country, must stop speaking and take some actual steps. We all understand that the problem is that many of the opposition teams in Syria are fanatics and can not be controlled -if they take power-. Syria is the only country where the local situation can calm down and lives be saved only by an occupation army. Turks and Americans must finally take such a decision.
