Syria has come to constitute a "clear and present danger" for Turkey, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said, adding that all military elements approaching the Turkish border from Syria would be considered "a threat" from now on.

The Turkish Armed Forces has changed its rules of engagement in the wake of the crisis, Erdoğan said. "The Turkish military will retaliate against border violations by Syria."

Everyone should know Turkey's wrath will "furious" over Syria’s downing of a Turkish jet last week, Erdoğan warned in his party's meeting today.

"Turkey's friendship is valuable, but everyone should know Turkey's wrath is equally furious," Erdoğan said.

Erdoğan "underlined" that the Turkish plane was shot down in international air space and crashed into Syrian waters.

"The downed jet was on a peaceful mission to test renewed radar systems," Erdoğan said.

Turkey's decision to act with common sense should not be understood as a state of weakness, Erdoğan said.

Turkish airspace was violated 114 times this year alone, Erdoğan said, added that all of the instances were resolved peacefully.

Syrian helicopters violated Turkey's airspace five times, but were peacefully warned to leave.

Syria's rulers did not represent the "brotherly" people of Syria, Erdoğan also said, noting the oppressive regime of Hafez al-Assad, the father of current President Bashar al-Assad. Turkey had hoped Bashar al-Assad would enact reforms to democratize his country, but the hopes were in vain, Erdoğan said.

"The current Syrian administration is a tyrannical regime that murders its own people," Erdoğan said, repeating that the al-Assad regime had "lost all legitimacy."

The jet was downed at noon on June 22.

Sad to say I think this was a weak response by the PM. It's also disconcerning to see many of you care so little for the pilots shot down.

Violating some ones airspace for a few minutes or fractions of a seconds does not constitute you shooting it down, otherwise commercial planes will be shot down every week or day even. You have to give warnings and shoot as last resort.Turkey said Syrian pilots and israeli jets violate Turkish airspace all the time they were given frendly warnings to leave and they left.Syrians are paranoid president Gul is right.

No need for Turkish troops,Syrian army defectors are getting stronger with army defecting growing .Syrians themselfs will depose Assad. The Kurds, if they join the oppostion then it will be over in a few weeks.

@Agnes Smith - You are comparing Bananas with Prickly Pears. for simple reason that you are not familiar with the Kurdish issue. There is hardly a town or a hamlet in Turkey without Kurdish population, if the Kurdish Politician has the ability he/she can become PM or President. Kurdistan has been part of Turkey as long as Turkey exists and is a ireplaceable strategic buffer, that Turkey will not give up. Turks, past & present are adroit players on the Political scene and dont need any tutilage!

PM is being used as an international pawn. Not scared to bomb Kurds (TK citizens) at the drop of a hat but not the Syrians. - The world has him weighed up - don't worry. Keep your planes away from Syria and don't provoke - or is that what the Pentagon ordered? This situation takes the domestic focus away from abortions and Uludere massacre, pressing agendas still not addressed.

@YANNIS MARANGOS, Dont't you wish that Greece/Cyprus had one like him? Few years back he showed the door to IMF, today Turkey is 6th Eco-Power in Europe contributing millions to IMF. He certainly will go into Turkish History as one of thestrong PM'sn necxt to Ataturk, I. Inenue & T. Oezal, as soon as he stops bashing the former two and tones down attacks on the Army, the Original creators of Turkish Nation as well as keeps the Republic neutrally Secular, out of clutches of Fanatics of ALL KINDS

As far as I know about those fighter's mission it was on ELINT mission they were supposed to make the Syrian air defense systems open their radars & then they use the radar radio waves to gather data about the Syrian air defenses to be analyzed later maybe in a preparation of a future military operation.

Syria recently attempted to undermine Turkey’s power by opening fire on Turkish villages near the common border, killing some Syrian refuges and wounding several Turkish citizens. Now, it moved one step further by shooting down a Turkish warplane, then fired into a Turkish search and rescue plane. Time for Erdoğan and our army, the TSK, to make al-Assad show some respect for Turkiye!

We will never get the truth regarding this incident, but as usual we have the world looking on as our leader screaming and shouting as if he is really going to do something. As (Rimon tree posted) Erdogan himself is the biggest danger to Turkey.
