‘Sylvia’ at Süreyya Opera

ISTANBUL
‘Sylvia’ at Süreyya Opera The Istanbul State Opera and Ballet (IDOB) has chosen a mythological piece for this season’s first classic ballet premier.

“Syliva,” the mythological love story uniting the huntress Sylvia and a lovelorn shepherd with the divine intervention of the deity Eros was first choreographed by Louis Merante to music by Leo Delibes in Paris in 1786.

It is now on stage in Istanbul nearly four decades after its premier in Ankara in 1967.

The ballet is choreographed by Marc Ribaud, with music performed by the IDOB Orchestra and conducted by Elşad Bagirov.

IDOB did not fall short of abiding to Sylvia’s reputation for its mythological Arcadian setting, using creative choreographies and expansive sets. The decor, as well as costumes, was highly appreciated, as was the performance in the premier, which took place last week.

“Sylvia” will be on stage on March 21 and April 4 at 4 p.m. and on March 19 and April 1 at 8 p.m. at Süreyya Opera in Kadıköy.
