Andrea Köppel, the wife of the Swiss consul and head of chancery, is now barred from leaving Turkey and required to sign in at a police station weekly following an alleged hit-and-run incident that wounded two.

A Swiss consular car, with Swiss Consul Florian Köppel’s wife in the driver’s seat, allegedly hit a married couple in Istanbul’s Bebek neighborhood. Andrea Köppel allegedly fled the scene after crashing into a motorcycle on which 49-year-old Doğan Durmuş İnal and his wife, Filiz İnal, were riding. Doğan Durmuş İnal suffered from minor injuries. Filiz İnal, however, was badly wounded and was taken to Şişli Etfal Hospital.

Köppel denied accusations of fleeing the scene, however, witness accounts stated otherwise.

The court today barred her from leaving Turkey and required her to sign in at a police station every Friday.

Please note that she was drunk behind the wheel. An alcohol control, 5 hours after the accident, showed she had between 0.59 and 0.84 promile alcohol in her blood.

THESSALONIAN In the USA either immunity is in place or it is not. There are no special conditions involved. If you are a diplomat from a foreign country working in the USA, then you have immunity regardless of what happens. Some Arab diplomats had rough sex with a girl in D.C. and ended up killing her and he left for SA and was never even charged with the crime because of his immunity and also just like STEPHEN reported there have been several traffic related incidents.

I agree there is no excuse for leaving the accedent but I expect she paniced and drove home. Of course she should pay for the damage she has done and pay for the hospital fees and loss of earnings etc.I feel so sorry for the lady who was hurt and I hope she gets better very soon. The swiss are usally very good at paying for their mistakes and I am sure the swiss goverment does not want this to disturd the good relations between switzerland and turkey.

MARA: Money to the victim of a car accident makes the charges go away in Turkey. Police facilitates such a transaction. After the agreement is reached, police make an accident report that shows the driver not at fault. Her leaving the accident scene can be easily justified by saying that she was afraid of the crowd, or in this case, of the uninjured husband of the severely injured woman. This lady looks very scared, she may not be even at fault here. Istanbul traffic is a true life hazard.

Reckless driving combined with leaving the scene of an accident. Both very serious offences. Wonder if there was alcohol involvement as it would explain why she fled the scene with no concern towards for her victims... Mrs. Köppel should be remorsefully ashamed of her inconciderate actions and should be treated no different than an ordinary Turkish citizen. Diplomatic immunity should not be applicable in this case. So either she has diplomatic immunity or not? This doesn't have anything to do with"Turkish style" privilege CEZER. In the USA liek STEPHEN pointed out, there have been some crimes committed by visiting diplomats that were not taken to court due to diplomatic immunity, even some crimes that were not "accidents" like this one, but were clearly malicious in nature. Nothing was done to those diplomats because of their immunity, BUT in the US once you commit a crime you r expelled for good.

She should be held accountable for this terrible incident. If she has diplomatic immunity, and it's not waved by the Swiss goverment, there is little that can be done, as she is free to leave if she so chooses. This happend in Canada a few years ago where a diplomat from Russia was drunk and killed a Canadian women with his car. The Canadian gov't was powerless to stop his leaving because of his status.
