Suicide bombers should not be publicized

Suicide bombers should not be publicized

Thanks to our officials, every detail about suicide bombers is only publicized after they blow themselves up.

For exactly this reason, suicide bombers become the number one names in the country after their deaths.

Imagine a person who sees themselves as “nothing” when alive who becomes a person Turkey talks about after a suicide bomb attack and their death. For instance, a cabinet minister publicizes them on television.

I wonder what experts think about this: What kind of mood a potential suicide bomber goes into after seeing this situation. Wouldn’t the appetite of these people, who are already sick and psychopathic, increase further?

The already weak characters would think: “Let me die and be famous.” Wouldn’t these characters whom are tricked into being immortal go wild after seeing this much publicity?

I am suggesting that our officials should make the suicide bombers famous not after they blow themselves up but before.

On calls to go out

Of course we should not succumb to terror and do what terror wants us to do. Of course we shouldn’t panic due to terror.

However, in a country where three bomb attacks happen in 10 days, where only two days after officials say the streets are safe, a new attack happens, where the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) takes the stage after the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) leaves, where every vehicle is viewed with the thought in mind that it might be a car bomb, where one cannot wander in a marketplace or square without feeling adrenaline, where entering shopping malls feels like taking a risk, where foreign diplomatic missions warn their own citizens to “not go out of their hotels” and where a major derby match is postponed because of intelligence, no brave fellow would easily take to the streets…

Before our leaders call for people to “go out in the streets,” they should first make the streets safe.

Mayor calls for İstiklal Avenue

The mayor of the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul, Ahmet Misbah Demircan, made a call. The mayor said the terrorists wanted to spread fear and make everybody hide - to stop life. “We cannot accept this. We should make İstiklal Avenue livelier so that we declare to the whole world that we will not succumb to terror. We invite all our people to meet in İstiklal Avenue. We will shop; we will listen to street musicians; read books; go to movies and theaters. We will show a humanitarian stance against terror. Come, you should come also.”
The call is not mine; it is Mayor Demircan’s. Thus, please note that I bear no responsibility.

Way to go Madame Rector Barbarosoğlu

Well done Boğaziçi University Rector Prof. Gülay Barbarosoğlu. She is fearlessly and heroically struggling for the arrested academic from her university, Esra Mungan.

She first met with Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor Hadi Salihoğlu. Then she met with Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu and briefed him on the situation.

She is trying to hold the sensitivity level of her university at the highest.

And one cannot stop from wishing that everybody should have a rector like her.

When this era is over, Prof. Barbarosoğlu will be remembered and highly appreciated by everybody for her heroism and bravery.
