Six people have been detained and their weapons seized in the southeastern province of Mardin after police raided two separate homes in the Kızıltepe district, upon intelligence that they were planning to assassinate a number of public officials including judges, prosecutors and the local district governor.

Police were informed of four to five people hiding in two separate locations planning to assassinate officials, the Mardin Governor’s Office said in a written statement on Aug. 26, adding that six suspects were detained overall.

“An operation was staged at 7 p.m. on Aug. 25 upon intelligence. An M16 long-barreled rifle with 11 shells and 516 cartridges, two Kalashnikov rifles with 500 shells, four pistols with eight shells and 99 cartridges, and a military vest were seized in the operation,” it stated.
