The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is not an alternative to the European Union, two of Turkey’s top officials said yesterday, as the prime minister said the way the EU had strung Turkey along was unforgivable and no longer bearable.

President Abdullah Gül reiterated the Shanghai Five, or SCO, and the EU are not alternatives to each other. “Unfortunately, the negotiation process [with the EU] is not proceeding as we wished due to the prejudiced manners of some member states. The prime minister reproaches that first of all,” Gül said yesterday at a press conference with his Serbian counterpart Tomislav Nikolic in Ankara.

‘We’re trying to fix deficencies’

Turkey aims to conclude the process of negotiations with the EU successfully and then allow anyone to take it to referendum for a yes or no vote, Gül said. “At the moment Turkey is a country that works to implement more EU criteria. We’ve had some deficiencies and we are trying to fix them with new legislations.” he said.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan echoed Gül’s words, while criticizing the slow negotiation process.

He restated that Turkey is already a dialogue partner of the SCO and the organization is not only a security oriented but an economic and cooperation union. “These are not alternatives to each other.”

Erdoğan raised the issue Jan. 25 of possible membership in the SCO, considering it an alternative to the EU at a time when hopes regarding the EU process are diminishing as a number of EU member states adamantly oppose Turkey’s membership.

Erdoğan also criticized the EU’s stance toward Turkey.

Speaking in Prague on the first day of a trip to central Europe, the prime minister said Turkey had originally begun talks on integration in 1963. The fact that the process was still dragging on was a particular slight because millions of Turkish people already live in EU states, he said.

Not acceding to the EU because of prejudice does not make Turkiye vulnerable but quite the opposite. We are sitting pretty on the fence trading away happily with the EU market without surrendering an ounce of sovereignity and remaining free as a bird to set our own budgets and foreign policies. Besides just look how the EU is riddled with problems that will last a decade or more to resolve and who knows what will happen after the UK quits. Lets just develop in all areas just as we are doing fast

Mr Adams: The problem with Cyprus is that the Greeks seem to be unable to accept the reality that THEY LOST! They tried to wipe out Turkish Cypriots but were crushed militarily by the devastating superiority of the Turkish Intervention Forces and are no match for the TSK now. Cyprus is used as an excuse to hold up Turkey's accession whilst the reality is that the EU fear a surge of Muslims moving into Western Europe. Once Turkey end the accession bid, the Cy-Prob and GC veto ends too!

@Mark Adams, what about the issues of Croatia, Serbia, the human rights of gays of Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, etc. they all step on human rights but are allowed within the EU. Turkey has been trying for over 30 years and every time when they do what the EU askes the EU comes with something new. They dont want Turkey because they are a Muslim state, lets be honest. All countries are corrupt one way or another...Turkey be wise, NEVER EVER join the EU, you give up all you rights.

ilker avni-this is the problem with Britain and the EU.It is a lack of knowledge of how the EU functions.Billions to French farmers, this is part of the CAP from which British farmers benefit.£7 an hour min wage since when?No rights and benefits and being dismissed by your employer, these are actually British rules, UK opted out of the EU ones and these rights will deminish further if we leave.

Hang on. Turkey is losing patience? Isn't it the other way round? There is a little problem called Cyprus which Turkey seems in no hurry to solve and which is one of the biggest stumbling blocks before Turkey can go forward towards EU membership.

Turkey was a political and economic basket case until the 2000s, so referring back further is stupid. Since then, other than for 4 years, Turkey has tried to play the EU for more and more concessions, negotiating every last point to death, seemingly not realising, or caring, that the EU is a common collective, in which each country both wins and loses for the greater good. This is not part of the Turkish psyche, which demands profit at any cost. It's time for the EU to give up.
