Shakespeare Year to be marked in Istanbul

The 450th birthday of Shakespeare will be celebrated all round the world with a series of events next year.

The whole world, including Turkey will mark the 450th birthday of Shakespeare with events throughout the year in 2014.

In Turkey, Istanbul’s Kenter Theater will stage his play, “Good Night Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet).”
According to a written statement made by the theater, the play recreates Shakespeare’s two best-known tragedies, “Romeo and Juliet” and “Othello,” with a different perspective.

The play is a 1988 comedy by Ann-Marie MacDonald in which Constance Ledbelly, a young English literature professor from Queen’s University, goes on a subconscious journey of self-discovery.

Ebru Soyuerden, Tuğçe Sartekin Karasu, Sinem Sarızayim, Serkan Altıntaş, Ozan Ayhan, Osman Kot and Kadriye Kenter all act in the play, while Kenter is also the director.

“Good Night Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet)” will be on stage at the Kenter Theater on Jan. 10, 11, 24, 25 and 26, 2014; at the Kozayatağı Culture Center on Jan. 5; and at the Caddebostan Culture Center on Jan. 12.

Meanwhile, the first Shakespeare Week will take place from March 17 to 24, 2014, across Britain in celebration of the bard’s 450th anniversary. The week will be celebrated in schools, theaters, historic sites, museums, galleries, cinemas, and libraries all over Britain.
