Seven Fenerbahçe fans were detained following their teams’ Spor Toto Super League game against Torku Konyaspor on Jan. 27.

More than a dozen fans were taken to the police office in the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium after the game. After testifying, police detained seven of the fans, taking them to a nearby police station.

Daily Hürriyet reported there were claims that the fans were chanting political slogans and this was the reason they were detained.

The daily talked to one of the members of the initial group taken to the police office, İlyas Bulcay, leader of the Fenerbahçeliler Fan Association.

“I was trying to avoid fan groups swearing and chanting political slogans but I was detained,” he said. “All I did was ask why the police were detaining people.”

Fenerbahçe games have been filled with political chants all through the season with supporters criticizing the government on the ongoing graft probe and commemorating Ali İsmail Korkmaz, a 19-year-old Gezi Park protester who was killed in Eskişehir.

Meanwhile, Fenerbahçe rallied to beat Torku Konyaspor in the game.

The Yellow Canaries found a late winner through defender Egemen Korkmaz, stretching its lead to 10 points over second-place Galatasaray in the Super League.
