A semiofficial Iranian news agency is reporting that the country has begun to design its first nuclear submarine.

The Tuesday report by Fars quotes the deputy navy chief in charge of technical affairs, Admiral Abbas Zamini, as saying Iran has begun "initial stages" of designing the nuclear-powered craft.

Adm. Zamini says Iran has developed "peaceful nuclear technology" and has both the capability and the right to build a submarine.

Iran and the West are odds over Tehran's nuclear program. The U.S. suspects it is aimed at developing weapons technology, a charge Iran denies.

Iran has domestically built several small submarines over the past years. It has recently overhauled one of the three non-nuclear Russian Kilo-class submarines it bought in 1990s.

@somalia - Iran as a country has many more urgent needs, for instance a gasoline refinery, as it stands right now Iran imports all of it gasoline needs, Just few Torpedo Boats or few Somoli Pirat boats can bring Iran's economy to a standstill, including the construction of the Propaganda Showboat, the Nuclear Submarine.

People don't seem to notice much of AKP's success comes from military development, the military industry in Turkey provides a lot of money Military development is good, it creates work, tax, and a lot of export.

That said, why aren't we building nuclear submarines .. they require fuel once every 30 years, are extremely vital for our army. Yet we continue making diesel electric ones. (Type 214TN for 2015 will be co-produced with Germans) This is a Sad situation, by now we know how to build much better diesel subs, yet we continue to buy/build licensed ones, we could have started developing a nuclear sub by now. But we are finally slowly starting the development of an aircraft carrier

Hhaha this is definitely a joke, reverse engineering can teach you a lot, but taking a part a couple of Russian submarines won't teach you how to build a new high tech nuclear submarine This will fail, Iran is capable of producing pretty good rockets etc. they don't care about patents etc, they simply reverse engineer things and copy and learn as much as possible. But I do not believe this will in anyway give them enough know how to build a nuclear submarine)

@Michael Why is it a joke? Do you think Iranians are not capable people or don't you believe that like everyone else they can do whatever they want with their knowledge? Iranians are capable and one of the most intelligent people who greatly contributed to the modern world during the Islamic Golden Age. Today you would not be reading this if it wasn't for Persian Muslim inventor al-Khwarizmi (Algorithm). You do know all machines and software do require algorithm both in command and logic gates
